Blood Bank Information System Version 2 (BBISv2)
The National Blood Centre (PDN), under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), is responsible for ensuring the availability, safety, and quality of blood supply across the country. It manages donor recruitment, blood collection, testing, processing, inventory, and distribution to over 100+ blood banks in MOH hospitals.
Overview:
MHNexus developed and implemented BBISv2, a secure, cloud-native national platform designed to digitally manage the end-to-end blood supply chain — from donor recruitment to patient transfusion, ensuring a “Vein-to-Vein Audit Trail” and complete traceability across all blood operations.
Problem:
The MOH faced challenges in managing a safe blood supply due to fragmented data, manual processes, inconsistent traceability, and lack of centralized control over blood collection, testing, and issuance. There was a pressing need for digitalization to improve compliance, efficiency, and safety.
Solution:
MHNexus delivered BBISv2 as a modular, microservices-based solution, covering the entire blood ecosystem, including:
- Sourcing & Collection: Donor recruitment, donor management, and mobile campaigns.
- Receiving & Outsourcing: Receiving bay logistics and outsourced blood handling.
- Testing & Production: Immunohaematology, microbiology lab testing, and blood component production.
- Warehousing & Fractionation: Centralized blood inventory and plasma fractionation tracking.
- Matching & Issuance: Matching blood units, issuing for transfusion, and finance handling.
- Request & Use: Integration with myBOS (Blood Ordering System) and clinical transfusion modules for hospitals.
All steps are monitored under Quality Control, Seroconvert Tracking, and Haemovigilance, with end-to-end traceability to ensure safety and accountability.
Outcome:
- Successfully deployed in 22 blood bank centers, with rollout planned for 93 additional sites nationwide.
- Enabled 100% traceability of blood units and components from donor to patient.
- Strengthened compliance with GMPC, PDPA, haemovigilance protocols, and WHO standards.
- Improved efficiency through workflow automation, real-time alerts, and data integrity controls.
- Received highly positive feedback from MOH and hospital stakeholders for enhancing operational reliability, patient safety, and audit readiness.
Established MHNexus as a strategic partner capable of delivering life-critical, high-availability healthcare systems.
